Diverse and Inclusive

People are at the heart of everything we do. We empower individuals and organisations to succeed by investing in lifelong partnerships, providing a first-class service, and always striving to do the right thing.

It goes without saying that a strong social and environmental purpose underpins our business’ narrative – one which is closely woven with the fabric of the communities we live in and work with. From expanding our ‘Helping for your tomorrow’ initiatives, moving closer to Net Zero, or empowering schools with tech and careers insights, we’ve demonstrated tangible social and environmental progress. And we have so much more planned for the future.

Best place to create a better tomorrow

As the world’s largest specialist recruiter, we’re in a unique position to enable real change; both on a local and national scale. We bring the full impact of our knowledge and technology to the partners we work with, helping to overcome some of the most significant social and environmental issues that persist in our society.

This can be seen through our strategic partnership with EveryYouth, a charity dedicated to ending youth homelessness and improving social mobility. Since 2019, we’ve raised £340,000 in funds, equating to over 13,000 hours of dedicated support with a job coach, or 258 young people placed into an employment, education or training pathway. And through our Flourish initiative, we’ve worked closely with the EveryYouth to establish a pro bono consultancy service designed to tackle inequality in employment opportunities.

There are many other societal initiatives we’ve been hard at work on: improving youth engagement across the education sector, facilitating a level playing field for workers living with disabilities, and developing underutilised talent, to name a few. And as we navigate uncertain global markets and new ways of working, we’re determined to transform our technology and services to ‘do the right thing’ for as many people as possible, creating a lasting social impact.

Driving DE&I across the board

Fostering diverse workplaces and catering for different perspectives is not only an ethical responsibility, but a requirement for innovation and competitiveness. It’s vital that we’re able to model high standards of diversity and inclusion as both an industry-leader and people-led business, and we’re committed to continually improving our DE&I agenda.

We’ve partnered with DE&I specialists across the business to attract diverse talent, maximise the potential of all our people, and help identify and break down any perceived barriers to access. Our DE&I efforts are tethered by close-knit employee communities, which empower our people to shape strategies that engender inclusive and physiologically safe workplaces where everybody feels valued. This includes our Women, Empowerment & Leadership Network, Parents Network, Pride Network, Black Network, and Hays REACH (Recognising and Enabling All Colleagues and Conditions at Hays) Network.

Together with our acquisition of FAIRER Consulting, a UK-based DE&I consultancy business, we’re able to support our clients on their own DE&I journeys, moving closer towards being a true DE&I leadership partner.

Going forward, we’re excited to explore how emerging tech trends and data practices can provide a clearer picture of workforces, along with the action needed to embed diversity at all levels.

What our employees say

open quotation mark I see inclusion in action at Hays through the communications, activities and strategies we adopt and promote. I see the great people that we are now lucky to have, in dedicated DE&I roles, helping us become more inclusive. I hear conversations of people comfortably challenging people at all levels to be better and to think more inclusively. I also see the impact of our Employee Resource Groups creating a greater level of awareness and as Co-Chair for the Black Network I know we are creating opportunities for sharing, learning and celebrating cultural diversity. close quotation mark

Co-Chair UKI Black Network

open quotation mark I have always perceived Hays as an open, tolerant organisation. With the focus and implementation of our DE&I strategy, I feel very strongly that we have been able to move beyond tolerance and openness. Our culture is accepting and embracing diversity, and there are less structural barriers limiting people to bring their full self to work. My best example for this is the Employee Resource Groups, which empower and bring to life different aspects of our diverse Hays population. close quotation mark

open quotation mark Inclusion to me is a daily choice we make as leaders and employees within an organisation, and is woven into our values and culture. As someone with dual identities, in being both gay and quite recently diagnosed with ADHD, I belong to two hidden minority groups. My experience at Hays having worked across multiple teams over eight years, is that we are always open to learning and creating space. I have the flexibility that allows me to have boundaries to enable me in being successful in my work, and I have never felt that my neurodiversity or sexuality has ever been a limiting factor in my career. close quotation mark

open quotation mark There's a term that society uses nowadays, which is third culture kid. What was really refreshing to see when I first joined Hays was that I wasn't the minority. There were so many other people like me. But it's also about being yourself and being able to share ideas that you truly feel passionate about. I've always felt like there was a sense of safety, to do that in the workplace. close quotation mark

Sustainability is core to our culture

Protecting the world we live in is a top priority, and it’s incumbent on us to lead and aspire our industry in environmental performance. We’re progressing from carbon neutrality to Net Zero, taking a deeper look at the ways we can leverage data and emerging tech to benchmark our sustainable performance and expand our ESG-related initiatives.

Key to this sustainable journey is our partnerships. We’ve nurtured mutually beneficial relationships with leading innovators and inspirational organisations, allowing us to simultaneously benefit society and the environment we live in. Whether it’s donating time and resources to our charity partner Trees for Cities, or recycling and donating hundreds of PCs to schools as part of our ‘Tech for schools’ initiative, we’re marrying social engagement with a commitment towards a greener climate.

We believe that our social and environmental initiatives shouldn’t be seen as short-term targets, but part of a continuing journey. In the spirit of being a lifelong partner to the organisations we work with, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our existing technology and services, leveraging our strengths as a leading organisation.
